Jim Robbins'

Brief Autobiography

I am a registered architect (the building kind, not the software/networking kind) in my early 30's, living and working just outside Princeton, NJ, USA.

I graduated from South Brunswick High School in 1994 and the School of Architecture at New Jersey Institute of Technology in 1999 with a Bachelor's of Architecture. I began working in the field in the summer of '98 and my current employer, RMJM, is my fourth (not counting mergers & acquisitions).

I completed the Intern Development Program (IDP) in 2002, the Architect Registration Exam (ARE) in 2003, and received my first state licensure in 2003. In 2004 I earned LEED accreditation. I spent most of 2008 on assignment to a field office in Abu Dhabi, UAE. For further professional history refer to my Résumé (PDF).

My professional future? Only

I joined the Kingston First Aid & Rescue Squad in 1993 as a cadet member and rose through the ranks until I got burned out and resigned in 2004. I also spent a couple school years volunteering with the Ironbound Ambulance Squad in Newark, while attending NJIT. After a little R&R a friend and former EMS partner at KFARS convinced me to become a firefighter -- I joined the Kingston Volunteer Fire Company #1 in 2004. It's interesting, there are cool toys and training, and I feel like some background in buildings' end-of-life issues makes me a little wiser when it comes time to design new buildings.

Photo of Denver, my Siberian HuskyI presently live just a little ways away from where I grew up, with my siberian husky in a condo in Monmouth Junction, NJ. The rest of my family gradually moved out of state, then my parents came back almost all the way to where they were previously.

I enjoy reading, radio scanners, alpine skiing, and rooting for the NJ Devils and NY Giants. My reading habits tend towards non-fiction and my television habits tend towards real/documentary and sitcoms; no "reality" TV! I'm interested in antique clock repair and have inherited some supplies and equipment for it but haven't gotten deep into it yet. The fire department gladly takes all the time I offer it and I try to get to the gym on a regular basis. My bikes and the D&R Canal towpath beckon but I'd like to find some more interesting trails nearby for some variety.
